Every year on May 25, World Thyroid Awareness Day is celebrated. Over 75 crore people in the world are suffering from thyroid problems. Of these, over 4 crore are in Bangladesh. The thyroid gland constricts the airways. These glands secrete hormones that play an important role in the digestive process. Death from fetal status requires thyroid hormone. Most of the people in the country do not know that they are suffering from thyroid problems. About 2% of adult women and about 0.2% of men in the country suffer from hyperthyroidism (thyroid hormone growth problem). People between the ages of 20 and 30 are more likely to get the disease. Adult men and women may also have hypothyroidism (thyroid hormone deficiency problems) at a rate of 3.9 to 9.4 percent. About 7% of women and men suffer from subclinical hypothyroidism. Newborns can also have thyroid hormone deficiency problems. Growing children may also suffer from thyroid hormone deficiency. When thyroid hormone deficiency occurs at this time, the physical and mental growth of children is disrupted.It is not possible to improve merit even if the balance of physical growth can be brought later; In other words, if the hypothyroidism of children and adolescents is not resolved quickly, the development of intelligence will be permanently hampered. Historically, Bangladesh is a country of goats or gossips.
Although the number of visible goiter patients is slightly lower than before, it is not less than 8.5 percent in adults. The number of thyroid cancer patients is also increasing. About 4.5 percent of goiter patients may have thyroid cancer.
Iodine deficiency is usually caused by a sore throat, which is commonly known as Ghag disease. With the funding of UNICEF-GI, the Government of Bangladesh took steps to market iodine in edible salts under the Universal Salt Iodination Project from 1993 to 2006. Following this, there is an obligation to sell iodized salt in packaged form in the market.Yet recent studies have shown that most of our school-going children and pregnant mothers are iodine deficient. Iodine plays an important role in the production of thyroid hormone.
Thyroid patients have been receiving treatment in Bangladesh for a long time. The Department of Endocrinology mainly treats hormonal disorders. Hormonal experts in almost every medical college of the country including Bardem Hospital, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka Medical College have taken the lead in this work but the doctors of the nuclear medical center and others are also its partners. Nose, Ear, Throat Specialist, Gynecologist, Pediatrician, Pathology and other diagnostic health care providers provide treatment for various thyroid hormone and glandular diseases in Bangladesh.
Therefore, in every developed country of the world, thyroid screening is done immediately after the birth of the baby. It should be made compulsory in our country as well. In addition, it is important to check the thyroid of girls before having a child, which can ensure the health of the mother and baby.
Some of the causes of thyroid problems in our country are arsenic, high synthetic or chemical and toxic foods and iodine deficiency.
